Five things.

All it takes is indulging in five things to put you on a solid path to something great.

  1. Knowledge
  2. Compassion
  3. Passion
  4. Self Esteem
  5. Awareness

Notice I said indulge in.  The list above tend to be topics we avoid, for whatever reasons, and never allow ourselves to fully find enjoyment in.  Just think how much happier we’d be if we did…

Read books (knowledge)

Reading is a workout for your brain.  You learn something new every time you read a book.  And it doesn’t have to be an educational/text book.

Reading is such an escape.  You get lost in the worlds, fall in love with the characters and just let the rest of the world go by.  Books bring out your imagination, they fuel passions (of many varieties I imagine) and inspire creativity.  Reading helps you learn more about yourself.

[Tweet “Make time to read a book, your imagination will thank you”]

Please don’t tell me you don’t have time.  Make time.  Even if it’s just 15 minutes.  Read during your break at work.  If you don’t like to read… that just tells me you haven’t found something that you like yet.  Keep looking.  Try the free 2 page samples on Amazon.  I’ve bought a few books after getting a little preview.

Care about things (compassion)

Things in this case are causes or topics.  Show compassion to others; it’s good for your soul.  Tweet that.

Volunteer at a local pet rescue or donate to a women’s shelter.  Help out on a community project like a neighborhood clean up or become a Big Brother/Sister and mentor a child.

Find something to care about.  Care deeply.

Get excited (passion)

Whether it’s your new book you’re reading (’cause you’re doing that now) or the new cause you’re supporting (you do that now too), you need to be excited about life and what you do.  Positivity all the way.

Find that the glass is half full part of you and let it shine.  Smile.  Share your new books and things you care about with people.  Let them know how much you care.  Get them excited too!

Try not to be too down on yourself (self esteem)

No one is perfect.  I promise.  No matter how great someone else’s life might look, they’ve dealt with some crap at some point.  And if they haven’t, they will.  We all do.

Fill that proverbial glass to at least half full and keep that chin up.  Surround yourself with people who build up your self esteem and keep you excited about what life has to offer.

Because…

You’re good enough, you’re smart enough, and, doggonit, people like you! ~Stuart Smalley, SNL

Enjoy the ever present game of knowing (awareness)

I want you to take a moment to observe the world around you.  Breathe deeply.  Listen closely.  Close your eyes if you need to.

Chances are by taking that moment to simply observe you probably noticed something you ordinarily wouldn’t have.  Pause from time to time.  Become aware of the life around you.  Every leaf and petal, the direction of the breeze, the sounds of your house settling.

While a great life may need more than these 5 things, embracing them sooner rather than later is a step in the right direction.

Are you on the path to something great?  What do you think helped steer you in the right direction?

  1. Lovely and inspiring post. You are on such a role! I feel like what has helped me head in the right direction is believing I deserve it and actually listening to what I want, instead of what I though I should want. Thank you so much for linking up with me at #mg and also #candidcuddles

    1. ::blushing:: gee, thanks ;) Telling yourself you deserve things, even simple things like reading a book, is so important. Because you do deserve it!

  2. These are good lessons I wish I had leaned earlier.

Through a mix of counselling and mentoring I’m trying to do those things (I wrote about it here: http://wp.me/p6SLXs-Bd) and more importantly have a solid plan so I don’t let those things drift.

    1. I wish I had leaned them earlier too ;) I used to embody these things, you know, as a child. There’s a reason kids are so happy…

  3. These are excellent lessons that I believe in too. Thanks for sharing
